Vampire Diaries: Enzo's Crazy Past Relationship Revealed -- What's the Salvatore Connection?

An old friend is back in town!

Trickery and bloodshed often follow The Vampire Diaries' Enzo, but even he will be shocked by what comes next. On Thursday's April 16 episode titled "I Could Never Love Like That," Enzo will reunite with the woman who turned him into a devilish vampire: Lily Salvatore.

Yep, brace yourselves! The new titillating story line will explore deeper into Enzo's (Michael Malarkey) past, and how he first met Damon (Ian Somerhalder ) and Stefan's (Paul Wesley ) mother Lily (Annie Wersching). Marlarkey is thrilled about pulling back his character's layers, and hints that their reignited relationship will cause nothing but trouble for the Salvatore brothers.

"We basically get to see Enzo at the end of his human life dying of tuberculosis trying to get on his passage-ship to New York. Basically, how he was turned," Malarkey, 31, explained to Us Weekly. "He was turned by Lily, who he ends up meeting on the dock and she takes pity on him and helps get him on the ship. They kind of establish this interesting dynamic."

Indeed, and a close bond. In fact, sneaky Enzo — a loner who Damon previously ditched to burn and die in a cell — will lean on Lily once he finds out that she's staying in Mystic Falls. As Malarkey notes, Enzo and Lily's past may "cause friction" between him and Elena Gilbert's (Nina Dobrev ) leading men.

"She's kind of a loose cannon at the moment and his allegiance is definitely more to her than to them because of all the stuff that's happened in the past," the actor-indie singer told Us. "So I think that whole triangle between the brothers, her, and Enzo is going to be interesting to explore."

Another new development for Enzo may surface in the romance department. While rehashing old memories, the handsome vamp will confide in Stefan and Damon's great niece Sarah (Tristin Mays) for support.

"It started off as something a bit darker where he's trying to corrupt her and use her to get back at Stefan," Malarkey told Us. "But over time spending time with her he's developed this sort of soft spot for her and ends up feeling compelled to divulge all this information about his backstory to her, which he wouldn't do if he didn't have a certain amount of feelings for her."

Enzo, of course, (when he wasn't torturing Zach Roerig's Matt Donovan!) appeared to be slowly changing his tune about the amateur photographer. "Well, [fans] expect some kind of romantic twist don't they?" he teased. "That would definitely be a way to get back at Stefan if they started hooking up."

But oh, there's one other way to ruffle Stefan's feathers! Steroline fans, however, can rest easy. Enzo may heavily flirt with Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) from time to time, but any serious interest to take the next step seems to have passed.

"I think Enzo's very much a realist and he realizes that [Stefan and Caroline have] this thing going. I don't know what the extent is of [Enzo's] feelings for Caroline, but I don't think that there's anything directly romantic there. I think there could have been something if she had returned it or made advances," Marlarkey said. "He just definitely enjoys the banter that they have back and forth and he gets kind of under her skin. And he thinks she's kind of funny."

Enzo and Caroline's relationship may be staying relatively the same, but Enzo is surely gearing up for new challenges up ahead — and that's just fine with Malarkey. "It's a great episode," he told Us. "I can't wait to see it."

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
